IBDsmart is an app that helps ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease patients record and report their symptoms to their gastroenterologist and IBD Nurse remotely. It has previously been piloted in Dunedin before being tested in a randomized controlled trial in Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland. It uses the Harvey Bradshaw Index as well as the Crohn’s Disease Activity Index for Crohn’s disease patients and Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index for ulcerative colitis patients. IBDsmart has been integrated with an app called IBDoc® which allows faecal calprotectin, an objective biomarker of disease activity, to be measured by the patient at home. IBDsmart will also be used alongside teleconsultations (i.e. appointments via video link) in a study linking patients living in Central Otago to their gastroenterologist in Dunedin remotely.
A variant of IBDsmart called IBDsmart REMIND has been created which will assist patients on biological treatment (i.e. infliximab or adalimumab) renew their treatment in accordance with PHARMAC regulations by prompting them to complete their Crohn’s Disease Activity Index via push notifications (as opposed to being reminded by their IBD Nurse or gastroenterologist).
